A new approach to the computation of entropy-related properties of fluids has been pre-sented.Application of the new technique to hard sphere fluids shows that it is capable of providingreliable estimates of such properties as the chemical potential and Helmholtz free energy, even athigh density where other existing methods are hardly applicable. The chemical potential of an infinitedilute component in hard sphere systems has been estimated, and compared with that calculated fromthe Carnahan-Starling equation.

Approximate solutions for gas separation by hollow fiber membranes have been developedby several investigators. However, there are few reports of experimental verification of the models forhigh stage cut separations. In this work,an approximate mathematical model was developed and wasexperimentally verified for high stage cut air separation. Both countercurrent and cocurrent now pat-terns were used.In addition, the applicability of feed-inside mode for low stage cut air separation byhollow fiber membrane was examined. It was found that feed-inside mods was more advantageousthan feed-outside mode when used for the generation of oxygen-enriched air.

From a number of ion-exchange resins and adsorbents,a macro-pore weak-base type anionion-exchange resin,D354,was selected for the separation of lactic acid.Experimental data showedthat simultaneous ion-exchange and physical adsorption existed in the lactic acid-D354 system.Amathematical model was suggested to simulate the experimental data. Also, the effects of inorganicsalts on the ion-exchange.equilibrium were studied. The difference in ion-exchange equilibrium be-tween DL-and L-lactic acid was observed.

In this paper, finite element method(FEM)is used to solve two-dimensional diffu-sion-reaction equations of boundary layer type. This kind of equations are usually too complicatedand diffcult to be solved by applying the traditional methods used in chemical engineering becauseof the steep gradients of concentration and temperature. But,these difficulties are easy to be over-comed when the FEM is used. The integraded steps of solving this kind of problems by the FEMare presented in this paper.By applying the FEM to the two actual examples, the conclusion can bereached that the FEM has the advantages of simplicity and good accuracy.

In this paper, effects of increasing the height of column, bubble size and gas flow rate onthe growth of suspended Catharanthus roseus plant cells in a 1.5 litre bubble column were studied.Statistical characteristics of turbulence such as auto-correlation function, and auto-power spectral den-sity function of the nuctuating liquid velocity were measured in a bubble column employing pseudo-cell-granulated agar.Calculations of turbulent shear stress were carried out. From these studies it is sug-gested that in plant cell suspension culture sparged with large bubbles.turbulent shear stress is prob-ably one of the most important reasons for the inhibited cell growth and cell damage.Larger bubblesor higher gas flow rates lead to the increase in shear stress and are more detrimental to plant cells.

The spinning flow of Boger fluids and the gravity-drawing extrusion flow of a Newtonianas well as a Boger fluid have been simulated by using the stream-line finite element method and thetechnique of matching the finite element solutions with those of one-dimensional spinning equations. The recoverable shear strain is proved not to be a basic parameter in characterising thespinning flow of Boger fluids. For Newtonian fluids this technique predicts the experimental jetshape accurately. For Boger fluids, the numerical simulation agrees with the experimental data of spin-ning flow reported by Sridhar et al.,but seems to give an insufficient swelling and over contractionof the jets when drawn by its own weight, compared with the experimental results of Trang andYeow. It implies that the Oldroyd-B model fitting the viscometric-flow data fails to describeaccurately the elasticity and extensional viscosity in the extrusion flow of Boger fluids with gravi-ty-drawing.
